Packages

If you are interested in a fishing/accommodation package see the 'Trout Fishing' section for information about fly fishing guides who regularly work in the Lumsden area and use Oreti River House as a base. The guides are happy to supply a package which would include guided fly fishing and accommodation at Oreti River House. Costs vary depending on the particular guide, the time of year and the number of people fishing. The Southland Region Fishing Guides are very popular and advance bookings need to be secured for their services.

An indication of the costs for a fishing retreat for 2 people include NZ$850-$950/day for a guide (depending on the individual fishing guide) plus accommodation at Oreti River House which varies between $235-295/night depending on the length of stay. Packages can be individually organized to cater for beginner fly fishermen in which case a "Fly Fishing School" will be run. For more experienced trout fishing enthusiasts a variety of fishing challenges can be organized on swift flowing water (sometimes more forgiving to short casting), slow clear streams ( where only one good cast is needed to a sighted fish), rivers with mixed rainbow and brown trout populations (rainbows are more enthusiastic takers of the fly), trophy trout rivers (where a smaller population of large brown trout live that require careful stalking) and fishing from drifting boats (generally on large, swift flowing rivers). Some guides offer back-country fishing trips where access to remote locations is from a helicopter or a 4W Drive vehicle. Contact the experienced fly fishing guides for more information to organize an individual fishing holiday that will be memorable, challenging and enjoyable. Information about guiding can be found at

as well as many other Southland New Zealand fishing websites.

Alternatively, you can email us at bookings@lumsdenholidayhouses.co.nz and request information and costs for a individual guided fly fishing and accommodation package. We would need to know the approximate dates of travel, how many in the group, how many days guided fishing are needed and the general fishing experience/expertise of the party. We can then liaise with the various New Zealand fishing guides that operate from the Lumsden area and design a fishing/ accommodation package that should suit you and your companions.

We know that the brown trout fishing in the local area is outstanding as we have been told by our guests from the USA that the Oreti is their "favorite fly fishing river in the world" and from the UK that "the brown trout hatchery in this area is the best they have ever encountered" and from Australia that "the dry fly fishing on the Mataura and Waikaia was amazing"

We can't guarantee that you will catch trout- as they are wily and can sometimes defeat the most skilled practioner! We do anticipate that by fishing in Southland you will experience something rewarding, testing and unforgettable. Combining a couple of days individual fishing with a few days guided fishing will increase you chances of success and certainly improve your skills. In fact, you may find that you have one of the most memorable fishing outings in your life!
